Litterbugs.

Hello all,
I've been attending Four Quarters events for four years now. This past festival was my first GMSF.

I was EXTREMELY disheartened at the amount of trash people threw all over that gorgeous land. NEVER have I seen such complete and total disrespect for the sacred space and the people who have worked so hard to create and maintain it. At every other 4QF event I've been to, it's been a huge surprise to find even 3 or 4 cigarette butts after the night of a drum and fire circle. At GMSF, you could not take a step without seeing some sort of refuse strewn on the ground. Unbelievable.

My boyfriend and I spent nearly two hours on Sunday before we left filling trash bags with cigarette butts, plastic cups, empty water bottles, beer cans, glowsticks, and stupid f*cking little plastic baggies from the High Meadow and the Stone Circle.

I cleaned up an area around a group of young men seated in the Stone Circle, swept it of every cigarette butt and bit of plastic... and when I returned to that space a few minutes later after cleaning up nearby, there was a brand new, still-burning cigarette butt lying there on the ground in the center of their little group. I was sick as a dog with a respiratory infection, covered in sweat, kneeling at the feet of these @ssholes cleaning up their mess, and they just tossed their cigarette butts right back onto the ground when I turned my back.

I was, and am, disgusted.

I sincerely hope that in the future, the attendees of this event behave more like the responsible, earth-conscious adults they claim to be instead of like a bunch of careless litterbugs who have only come to Four Quarters to get f*cked up and trash the place. I won't be there next time to clean up after you, because the anger this has caused me is enough to deter me from ever attending GMSF ever again.

I agree and it is rather sad concidering the strong Leave no Trace ideals suposedly in effect. I did see lots of new faces this year. In 2006 I remember them handing out these little 'Butt Pouches" It seems like there was less cigg litter that year, not that there should be any at all.

Not to mention the watermelon rinds left on the altar of all places... I *highly* doubt they were placed there as an offering and then eaten by Mother Nature.

When I arrived Wednesday, the land was beautiful and spotless.. by Sunday afternoon, you simply couldn't stand anywhere without seeing trash tossed to the ground by some lazy person.

You wouldn't toss your cigarette butts and trash on the floor of a church sanctuary, but that is exactly what happened.

I am shocked and deeply ashamed by the lack of respect and selfishness that I witnessed this weekend.

I completely agree. It was disgraceful to see all of the trash around. I am not saying that these litter bugs were innocent, but there were no trashcans around, except the small one at the coffee dragon and the trashcans around the kitchen. When we were leaving we were trying to find extra trash bags to line Adam's car because I used the ones that I had. The kitchen wanted to charge us $1 for a trash bag. The Gaian Mind staff camp gave us 2 bags. If they want their land to stay clean, then they need to provide trash cans and what not. I'm sure that there would still be litter bugs, but maybe it would decrease. I carried out all of my trash. It is horrible that someone would put trash on the alter.

I don't think the 4qf staff should have to give out trash bags or cans. Sure, it'd be a nice thing, but I don't think it's necessary and I don't think they can be held responsable at all for the litter. I've been to PDF twice now, and never have I seen any stray garbage even touch the ground in the first place (or at least VERY little, with the planned volunteering too)... This was my first time at GMSF and I too noticed a ton of litter, especially cigarette butts. If "Leave No Trace" is a well known condition of a festival or party, proper care should be taken to make sure each group has enough bags of their own, and space to take them back once full. Our group had a number of smokers who carried the little butt-baggies. We also had a nifty ashtray in our camp that clipped onto a chair cupholder (it was deep with lots of space for butts) Personally, when I go to a beautiful, natural, and spiritual land, I prefer my air to be as clean as the ground should be litter free. I had a *very, very* hard time finding *anywhere* to hang out without at least 3 cigarettes lit up around me. But, unfortunately I can't expect party-goers to refrain from smoking, I just had no idea how much cigarette smoking there was going to be! Considering how crappy I felt most of the weekend and how much my chest was hurting from constant second hand smoke (even at the creek, which could have felt like my ultimate paradise), it was a bit of a drag on my experience when I expected to enjoy fresh and beautiful air away from my city life... sigh

4QF has always made it very clear that you carry out what you bring in. They give attendees the option of buying the yellow trash bags that can be disposed of at the farmhouse if they don't want to drive their trash home with them. Or you simply bring along garbage bags, or even plastic grocery bags. You put your cigarette butts in your pockets if you find yourself outside of your camp without a bag in which to dispose it.

At every other event at 4qf it hasn't been an issue at all for people to carry out their own garbage... why is this group so special?

did you actually say anything to that group of people? maybe they needed a reminder as to what 'leave no trace' is all about...some folks still haven't gotten that memo yet, believe it or not. it is mentioned on the website & flyer handed out on the event, but not everybody is aware enough to pay attention to that shit, unfortunately :(

Also, I saw quite a few people dumping 3 or more bags of trash at the gas station, pretty much anywhere just to get it out of their cars. Personally I think it would make more sense to offer ecologically sound and fairly priced disposal services on-site. Contract with a waste management company to make it available rather than have 500 people drop garbage on nearby businesses.

Another possibility would be signs throughout the event that remind one of the LNT philosophy and instruct where which recyclables can be put.

As most people know that Burningman is also a leave no trace event. Each year they have alot of huge trash containers along the road for proper disposal.(they look like train cargodevices) It is a great thought..
It is sad to see so many people destroy a good thing going.
Again another thought, perhaps the unsanitary ways helped bring fourth so much sickness.
We took our trash home... BAck to Ohio!

Ecologically sound and fairly priced disposal services WERE available on-site.

We had a dumpster at the farmhouse for trash collection, for which a yellow trash bag could be purchased at less than $5 a bag. We had a recycling dumpster at the Coffee Dragon for the dumping of mixed glass, mixed plastic, aluminum and steel by Gaian Mind volunteers. There were recycling bins stationed at the Chai Shop in the North Crook and the Coffee Dragon near the Stone Circle.

Various other recycling stations were set up at the entrance to the North Crook across from the bathhouse, and the Coffee Dragon's trash can was even dragged over to the Covered Stage.

Despite ample signage however, none of these recycling stations were used appropriately.

Also, I worked the Registration Desk for 8 hours and personally described the recycling practices and trash dumping procedures there as well as to festival attendees directly.

There were recyclables placed in yellow trash bags mixed in with regular trash. There were white plastic bags of trash piled around the recyling bins. The level of trash I saw strewn around sacred ground disgusted me.

What was so difficult to understand?
Put only recycled objects in the recycling bins and we'll pick it up and dispose of it for you.
Put your trash in yellow trash bags and then the dumpster, or haul it out yourself.
      That's it.

yea the recycling stations pretty much turned into general garbage drop off.
well at least by the north crook bathhouse, we picked up the garbage there sunday and it was alot more than just recyclables, though alot of it was like half trash, half recyclables. still, after having gotten sick, I was less than happy about wanting to pick through trashbags.

I was annoyed by the new comers who didnt follow the leave no trace policy, especially since I'm a newcomer who did follow it. dont be so quick to blame people just because they are new, alot of us have leave no trace policies in our own tribes and follow them to a T when out at a gathering like this. Obviously there were some careless kids this time around. I think alot of people took the mad dash approach when they got sick and didnt stop to think about the cleanup crew who would be stuck picking up thier mess.

I would figure that, and the rainstorm on sunday probably attributed to the litter problem, as people were in a hurry to leave and didnt take the time to spot check camps for trash and didnt want to haul wet trash bags home.

thats just my 2 cents. I dont think it excuses it but thats what it seemed like to us as we picked up. next year we need to pick up the peer pressure guys.. and perhaps have a few more garbage cans in the communal areas to give an option to those without pockets who dont want to litter..

I did not attend this event, but I picked up several garbage bags of other people's trash at Goa Gil event in Asheville this past May after the drum circle on friday night. There was a pile of beer bottles from a crew of new attendees that filled two complete trashbags. As much as it boggles my mind how a grown person could look around at the serene, majestic land that is Deerfields and even consider for a second that throwing garbage on the ground is a acceptable, my crew and I made it a point to remind people that attended our poi workshop the next afternoon of the Leave No Trace policy. We encouraged others holding workshops to do the same. The next morning when the sun came up on the dancefloor, the amount of trash was reduced to almost nothing. Point being, as frustrating as it may be, a reminder will work wonders!

LNT isn't understood by everyone. Many people are accustomed to attending concerts and raves where part of their ticket price goes to hire people to come in and clean up after them. It only takes a few litterbugs to really trash a place. Best thing is to educate them. If I were to see someone throwing a cigarette butt on the ground I would pick it up and hand it back to them, letting them know they dropped something.

What was done was good. I didn't know that there was trash disposal on site as I was never offered to purchase any bags. LNT to me means pack-in = pack-out.

Thanks for making an effort and sorry for all attendees who made a mess. My suggestion is to try to put up more signage next year.

It breaks my heart to see what things people leave behind...absolutely broke my heart!

I will put aside all the politics that went into trying to maintain a proper recycling program, because... well... there were some MASSIVE issues on Four Quarters side. Trust me on this ... there were. But in any event, the responsibility for your trash and your recycling falls on the person...the festival goer. I was so disheartened by people when I left that I'm currently questioning my trust and faith in humanity as a whole.

I'm hoping people wise up and grow up and become responsible... because it's high time that they do!

Coehlo...thanks a TON for taking the time and putting the effort forth to do a great deed... I'm glad you took the initiative to do it and I hope others will learn from your example...PICK UP YOUR BUTTS DAMMIT!!!!

In my opinion we shouldn't have even offered to take anyones recycling at all, LNT means Leave no Trace which means everything, if you take some trash and not other trash then that defeats the whole idea. I have been to Burning Man three times now and people bring stuff in and then take their own trash out and there are more than 40,000 people there, so with only 1,000 at 4Q's why can't people just take out what they bring in? It should be each person's own responsibility. If you want to recycle you can bring your own recyclables home and recycle them yourself. Cigarette butts on the ground is just unacceptable! I can't stand when people throw them on the ground in the city (where at least someone is paid to come along and clean up your trash), much less on the beautiful green Earth we are dancing on.

Thank you to everyone that did help pick up everyone else's trash this year, your help is much appreciated.

The reason that many people like mac computers is because they work well intuitively.
The same goes for proper trash and recycling.
It doesn't matter if you have a sign if someone is blitzed out into some spirit realm and they only have glow sticks to see with.

If this festival is any representation of the larger society as a whole it is through intuition and placement that any problem can be solved.
For instance, slotted recycling tops that make it hard to place trash into.

A large plastic lid with a bottle size hole. (With modified glow ring.)
Write "Leave no Trace." in glow in the dark letters by the glow in the dark trash areas.
Make trash receptacles open topped with glowing lips (done through paint or connected super glued sticks.)

Place the trash receptacles within drink exhaustion distance.
I.e. buy something or bring something from your tent then figure out how long it takes to drink.
When it's finished mark the ground with chalk/paint or other marker.
    Put a trash can there.

Many of the festivals are about experimentation with new forms of society.
We have to find solutions to the problems that arise.
How do we communicate with those that can't communicate with themselves?

How do we help those that treat their friends like garbage?

It's hard in the end to decide what to bring in a car after the event is over
    A bag of garbage
    or
A friend that someone left behind

    Pay attention
    Listen
    Find a solution

    Then fix the problem

yes, the amount of MOOP just left there was high above what i would see as reasonable.
i would certainly volunteer for any well thought-out effort to build MOOP awareness and actually get people automagically tom-sawyered into cleanup activities.

yeah it totally sucks when people leave their trash for others to pick up. not excusing anyone but the weather and people throwing up on therselves def had an impact. really there should be staff for this sort of thing. i didnt hear about any trash bags, i brought my own. trashcans would have been nice along the roads. for people in between campsites.

bottom line is you need to make sure it is overly easy for people not to litter or they will.

yeah....i didn't litter but shouldn't there be a trash service if your paying 150$???

that might help next time wouldn't you say?
