Why are there no more Gaian Mind monthlies in Phllly? Is it too much to ask for some decent music once a month? Does anyone remember when it was twice a month? Those were the days...Now I'm waiting months between parties. Nothing regular at all. Or I'm heading to New York. They certainly have regular parties up there. Gaian Mind used to be a dependable organization of people who cared for the music, and the scene, and the vibe. Maybe there are executive issues. Maybe too many chiefs and not enough indians. Maybe the wrong people are making the wrong decisions. Maybe people who think they have authority are more concerened with their own egos and advancement rather than concentrating on providing a safe haven for those of us who just can't handle the booty-shaking, jack daniels shooting, sports team following, meat-market bar scene. All I'm saying is I miss giving my money to Gaian Mind. I miss the people, the atmosphere, and most of all, the music. What will it take for Gaian Mind to come together as a unified entity and continue the legacy of the "Premier Psy-Trance Party in Philadelphia?"

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 10:27 AMI have to admit. I did not know that "word." So here ya go:
fnord
1. A word used in electronic mail and news messages to tag utterances as surrealist mind-play or humour, especially in connection with Discordianism and elaborate conspiracy theories. "I heard that David Koresh is sharing an apartment in Argentina with Hitler. (Fnord.)" "Where can I fnord get the Principia Discordia from?"
2. A metasyntactic variable, commonly used by hackers with ties to Discordianism or the Church of the SubGenius.
The word "fnord" was invented in the "Illuminatus!" trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.
Discordianism
/dis-kor'di-*n-ism/ The veneration of Eris, also known as Discordia; widely popular among hackers. Discordianism was popularised by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson's novel "Illuminatus!" as a sort of self-subverting Dada-Zen for Westerners - it should on no account be taken seriously but is far more serious than most jokes. Consider, for example, the Fifth Commandment of the Pentabarf, from "Principia Discordia": "A Discordian is Prohibited of Believing What he Reads." Discordianism is usually connected with an elaborate conspiracy theory/joke involving millennia-long warfare between the anarcho-surrealist partisans of Eris and a malevolent, authoritarian secret society called the Illuminati
Made up words aside...... there are still no monthly Psy Trance parties in Philly. That I know of. Maybe I'm following the wrong crowd. Maybe I'll start a monthly........ -

Sun, January 27, 2008 - 2:26 PMspeaking of venues i heard in an e-mail from rizumu that the vacuum got in some trouble with the authorities after their last party, they had to move their next party to a different venue. that is kind of not fun, since it was awesome for the ananda benefit

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 9:16 AMDude, who the hell are you and why aren't you making parties?? The reason there are no more monthlies is because they weren't special. It seems to get harder and harder to get any good artists here in philly, especially if your party is just another bi-weekly that gives people, if they're lucky, three hours of good partying time. Sure we have a good few local djs that rock the house, but when you have a bi-weekly party on a Dj loop of about ten people for main stage and chillout that ends at 2AM, it loses something big.
What I remember about those wonderful times you speak about are parties where we'd be lucky to have 50 people show up, there'd be barely enough money at the end of the night to pay the artists and usually no money at all to pay the organizers. You try busting your ass for hours on end every two weeks when you have work the next morning all so that the same djs can play the same music to the same barely-fucked-up barely dancing fifty people for three hours and then not even have enough left over to help out with rent a little bit.
Well, let me tell you, from SECOND-hand experience, it gets old. The fact is, until certain huge logistical factors are worked out, Philadelphia's psy-trance scene CAN NOT support good parties every two weeks. It's a pipe dream. We need to see more parties like the one in Vacuum happening. Maybe a bi-monthly. Or not even something that's regular. Just a good party like that every once in awhile. Unfortunately, Vacuum was just shut down, so we need to find another space that allows us to party all night long, which is not easy at all.
Say what you want about needing psy-trance parties in philly; for god's sake, I think we all want to party pretty badly, but until you offer some solutions to the problems we face, I find it completely unacceptable for you to say these people who've been busting their ass for years to make parties in philadelphia (MYSELF NOT INCLUDED) are too concerned with their own egos and advancement to make parties anymore. Sure, there's been some drama in management, like there is with any trance scene IN THE WORLD, or any close-knit group of people in the world for that matter, but that's not what stopped the regular parties. Throwing parties, like life, is, on the surface, a numbers game. And if the surface is not stablized, it makes it next to impossible to experience all the beauty that lies within.
Gaian-mind has been making kick ass parties in Philly for over ten years now, and will continue to do so for much longer, I promise, but we WILL NOT settle for mediocrity. So consider this hiatus a re-grouping, or re-evaluation of the scene here in philly and what it needs to move forward. Until then, BUY psy-trance albums, play them to your friends, get them hooked, and tell them about Gaian mind and how they made the most kick-ass trance parties around, and will continue to do so in the near future. Make sure they're there for the new age of gaian-mind. Make sure that by then we'll have more players on our team in this twisted numbers game and we can all dive below the bullshit and lose ourselves in dance. But FOR FUCK'S SAKE, DO NOT GO ACCUSING THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY WERE DOING ANY MOTIVATING IN THE SCENE OF BEING TOO SELF-INVOLVED TO THROW GOOD PARTIES ANYMORE. FOR FUCK'S SAKE!!! -

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 12:37 PMIt would seem that the psy-trance community thrives in warm weather. Finding a venue is always a BITCH... and outside is much more suiting of these events. Perhaps the people who regularly throw the events (like anyone who does events regularly) need time for their head and heart to relax, time for their life to regroup, and time to just remember why they love it. I know when I'm doing event's bi-monthly or even monthly it feels like my head and heart are going to explode sometimes and it's really nice to step away. The flip side is that if only one team of people are always putting forth the effort and no one else is it gets old quick. Especially as attendance dwindles. Perhaps take this time to see what else is out there. From my personal experience there is ALWAYS a party in this city. ALWAYS!!!! This month coming up alone has more events each weekend then one could reasonably go to. Perhaps the other alternative is to just go out and do it youself. It's a lot of fun and something I love to do!!!

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 3:54 PMvery well said indeed. i hope you didn't waste your breath though trying to explain the whole process of organizing to this bloke.
i can't begin to comment on the situation in philly obviously...
BUT i can tell everyone here (w/o sounding like i'm whining) that they should be lucky to have the people, the support, the love, the venue (when u did)....etc. there's positivity to see in everything.
you should feel lucky b/c you must keep in mind that unless you live in SF or NC. finding/starting a stable psytrance community anywhere in the states is difficult to say the least.
in my case (new orleans), i have access to sound equipment. i have access to all-night-type venues. but what i don't have is the people. i'm a one man psy-army quite simply. it becomes just as psyops said, a numbers game....if i can't fill the venue, everyone loses, artists included....
seriously (besides the ATL crew), how many people would really drive all the way the fuck down here! lol, oh yea, then i have to convince my artists/dj's to do the same thing. hmmm, gas/air travel gets expensive....lol
anyway guys, y'all don't know me well, but peace to everyone and i hope you can find solutions for your situation in time.
cheers

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 4:56 PMPsytrance parties are suffering all over the place - not just in philly. NYC has its own problems (as anyone who had the pleasure of hearing PsyOps KiLLeR set at our 6362MetaForce party last week would know - - that was one "pleasure and pain" experience if there ever was one!!) ... not to mention every country i've been to for parties in the last year: Switzerland, Sweden, and India.
It's not an issue of 'executive decisions' - it's a conflation of many issues. The authoritarianism of our governments is part of that; the primacy of finances in every 'scene,' including what we conceive as underground arts; and a loss of faith among the formerly faithful, manifested as an incredible arrogance among self-proclaimed "trancers" instead of the loving spirit we all used to share on the dance floor as the insane stomping tranceheads we are, at the core.....
We're all still out here, so let's remember that.
I wish you all the best in finding new venues and spirit in Philly. We're doing our best in NYC to keep the vibe alive - - and Vish and I'll do so next month in India, too - where all of our old locations and venues are no longer options (even our small party in Goa had to be cancelled this year) -, but where we find connection with so many of our old fart psychonaut tranceheads and so many young seekers who are eager for a 'better' experience..... both in terms of music AND vibe....
I still have a lot of hope - but I always remember that we need each other to make everything happen. So I guess I'm encouraging everyone to keep focused on the music and the dancefloor!!! That's where trance lives and that's what brings us all together :-))))

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 6:50 AMI hate to dissapoint, but I'm nobody. A face in the crowd. I wish I had the time and resources to throw good parties. Isn't that what an organization that's been around for ten years for? We have phenomenal DJ's in Philly and I love the Philly Psy-Trance family. But sometimes, the horse needs a crack of the whip to march forward. I don't want violence, or hatred. The sword must be forged in intense heat and forcefully hammered before it can be wielded in battle. I know it''s tough to keep a dependable schedule, and difficult to find a venue that will allow our kind of fun.
My aim is not to instill animosity among the faithful. I only hope to open the eyes of those who are in the position to make decisions, and bend their ear to the troubles of the common man.

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 10:12 PMdidn't have the pleasure of hearing the pleasure/pain set...but i feel your pain nonetheless. i don't know much about the 'scene' problems outside the usa. i arrogantly assumed i guess we were the only ones with problems. the fact that it affected goa is troubling, even for india's standards...troubling....
the authoritarianism you speak of is worldwide. if we want to survive which inevitably we will, we must work within it and still achieve peace for the people who love and care for the music if we want to obtain a long term solution.
as far as focus, this very discussion is the reason i started a label! i also share your hope =)
cheers

Re: Where has all the Psy Trance in Philly gone???!!
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 5:21 PMi thought i was the only one that was thinking about the lack of parties here in philly , i thought that it was just the venue problem. I know for one i love to dance , and if there was anything psytrance going on in the city no matter where it is , i would be up for it , even in the depths of a crematorium i would dance until i bleed. but it looks like gaian mind will have its yearly and thats it now. yeah i checked that shady club out (Vacuum) , i'm kinda glad that it won;t be the home of the monthlies , could you find a more dump of an area to go and park your car. I my as well park my car in a sewer and leave the keys in the lock. but for now i'll look for the occasional party to travel too and just dance away to the many forms or psytrance i already own in my basement , i'm sure my neignbors hate it , but fuckem , i bought the house to do whatever i want when i want. and shit , we don;t care who the fuck the DJ is , doesn;t matter to me, shit you could mix any cd;s together and i would be happy .
live long live free -

I found it!!!!! I found the trance!!!!!
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 1:48 PMjust a small rant from the peanut gallery
Gaian Mind is well known for hosting kick ass psy parties. We are not "taking a break" in that we are stepping back, out of the scene. I think it would be more accurate to say we are collecting our resources so the next party we throw will be of true GM caliber. The venue situation is a given. The days of Ulana's are long gone and for good reason. Gaian Mind was abused there on a monthly then bi-weekly basis ( no heat in winter, no ac or open windows in the summer, cleaning up after the party the night before, dealing with Ulana, etc.) for a turn out of 15 to 40 dancers. we are trying not to let that be the case at our next venue. The magic of GM is the combination of elements that are brought together to create each party (seperate chill-out, uv deco & tapestries, mackie sound system, intelligent djs), with out these elements and the people who set them up and break them down at the end of the night, Gaian Mind is no different than Funkshun or Rizimu or flippin Webster Hall. We might as well host at Shampoo and bring in Louie Devito.
The problem is (i think) our standards are very high, and unless we can throw a party that we would proud of, we would rather do what we are doing right now, collecting our resources. We hear the cries for music! We want the parties just as bad as you (if not worse). However Gaian Mind is not a "half-ass" organization, so don't expect us to throw a half-assed party. When everything is right, the pieces WILL come together and we can all dance together all night 'till the sun comes up! I just think back to the Healing Ananda Benefit in Philly, that was probably my favorite GM event ever (withholding the festys of course) we didnt forget about Philly we just want to do it right.
On a side note, if someone knows of a venue (bar, club, basement...) in the area that will allow psytrance, as far as I know, the full roster of GM djs are available to play. I saw many of them at a house party for example, a few weeks ago, and I heard rumors of another all night house party in the suburbs in the first couple of weeks of March. It doesnt take GM to throw a psy party. I think P.S.I. was throwing some of psy parties at some point, maybe psychophillyac (who oddly enough has 0 friends) could find their tribe and rustle a few feathers there.
anyway, long rant longer... The DJs still have their cds and headphones If you want to dance and can't stand it any longer may i suggest:
1 find a space
2 set a date
3 book us through the artist page of www.gaian-mind.com
4 dance your 'effin "a" off
5 write a blog about it
